About Riikka Koso, MD

Dr. Riikka Koso is an upper extremity surgeon who treats a variety of conditions affecting the upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. Her expertise includes a diverse array of musculoskeletal issues, such as repetitive use injuries, fractures, dislocations, tendon and nerve injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, arthritis, ligament tears, cysts, trigger fingers, tendonitis, and Dupuytren’s disease. She also has extensive experience in wide awake surgery under local anesthesia using WALANT.

Dr. Koso was raised in Ohio with roots in Finland and Ireland. She was lucky to have an early exposure to medicine, due to the kind and thoughtful influence of her mother, Dr. Sylvi Koso. Dr. Koso earned her bachelor’s in science with honors at Emory University, where she performed basic science and clinical research on nerve injury and Alzheimer’s disease, respectively. She graduated summa cum laude with honors, with a major in neuroscience and a minor in global health.

Dr. Koso obtained her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. As a medical student, she co-founded an organization called DukeMed Engage, which supported medical students in leading community health initiatives locally and abroad. Dr. Koso completed her orthopedic surgery residency at UT Health in San Antonio, Texas, where she was fortunate to care for a diverse array of patients from all walks of life. While in Texas, she published scientific research on complex upper extremity reconstruction, which was featured at national conferences. Dr. Koso also completed an additional year of subspecialty training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. She continued to contribute to evidence-based medicine while at UPMC by performing research on trigger finger and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Dr. Koso is an avid outdoors enthusiast and enjoys rock climbing, biking, paddleboarding, running, and hiking with her dogs. She speaks Spanish and finds great joy in treating patients of all ages with orthopaedic conditions affecting the arm, elbow, wrist, hand and fingers. She is grateful to be a part of the OCR family and proud to serve the communities of northern Colorado, southern Wyoming and western South Dakota. Her clinical sites are in Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley.
