About William Cooney, MD
Dr. Cooney is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon who specializes primarily in arthroscopic surgery and rehabilitation of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. In addition, he has vast experience in knee, hip, and shoulder replacement.
Dr. Cooney joined Front Range Orthopedics & Spine after completing a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute under the direction of renowned Dr. James R. Andrews. As a fellow, he participated in the care of athletes at all levels including several professional, college, and high school athletes. This unique fellowship has provided Dr. Cooney with extensive clinical and surgical experience in both athletic and non-athletic injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. He applies the newest, least invasive, and most advanced techniques to facilitate earlier return to work or sport. Common conditions treated include rotator cuff tears, labral tears, shoulder instability, elbow stiffness, elbow instability, throwing related elbow ligament injuries, as well as complex ligament and meniscus injuries to the knee.
Prior to Dr. Cooney’s fellowship, he completed his residency at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he gained considerable experience in total joint replacement of the hip, knee, and shoulder. In addition, Dr. Cooney has authored and published manuscripts in peer-reviewed orthopedic journals and has presented his research at both national and international meetings.
Dr. Cooney is Board-Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is an active fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of both the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, as well as the Rocky Mountain Shoulder and Elbow Society. Dr. Cooney currently serves as Director of the Bone and Joint Institute at Good Samaritan Medical Center.
Dr. Cooney is the team physician for Niwot High School athletics.
